Greeting

The 87th Annual Meeting of the Botanical Society of Japan (Hokkaido Meeting) will be held in a hybrid on-site/online format from the Sapporo Campus of Hokkaido University. As an optimist, I am confident that the coronavirus will have almost no impact, but I have also come to realize that the online format, which was a measure against the coronavirus, can be utilized in ways that an onsite format cannot. The Organizing Committee decided therefore to hold as many of the Hokkaido Meeting events as possible in a hybrid format. Thus, we are proceeding with preparations for the Meeting with the support of the Organizing Committee, the Secretariat, and the Hokkaido members of the Botanical Society of Japan, and we would appreciate your cooperation in running the Meeting.

The Hokkaido Meeting will start with online poster presentations on September 4 (Monday) and will continue with on-site presentations from September 7 to 9 (Thursday – Saturday). The on-site venue will be the Faculty of Engineering, Hokkaido University, located in the middle of the Sapporo campus. Please note that it takes about 20 minutes on foot from JR Sapporo Station to the venue. A wide variety of programs are planned, including oral and poster presentations, award-winning lectures, symposia, luncheon seminars, and corporate exhibitions. On the last day of the Meeting, the 9th, we are planning research presentations by high school students and a public lecture as an opportunity for the members of the Botanical Society of Japan to interact with high school students and the general public. The purpose is to nurture the next generation and to think about the relationship between plant science and society.

A wide variety of research is being conducted on botany, from basic to practical, from molecules to landscapes, introducing a variety of methods, and we hope that the conference will help accelerate the progress of botany by incorporating the results of a wide range of research encompassing these areas. In the public lectures, under the theme of "Nature of Hokkaido as Seen from Plants," we hope to further deepen the understanding of the necessity of botanical research and the role it plays in society.

Just one point. I am very sorry, but it is undecided if a reception and mixer will be held, although we are considering the implementation. We sincerely apologize, but in case these events cannot be realized, we would appreciate it if you find informal ways to exchange for the development of botany while enjoying the delicious food that only Hokkaido can offer. Various applications and outlines will be posted on the conference website, which will be updated as they are finalized, so please check from time to time. We will also use the website to disseminate the program and other detailed information. The entire Organizing Committee looks forward to your participation and cooperation in making the convention a great success.
